The Government, whose definition of essential services does not seem to include healthcare, has issued a notice asking all those who are planning on falling ill or likely to be undergoing any medical procedure to reduce the seriousness of their ailment by 15% in order to prevent paying the increased VAT charges.
In a statement, the Health Minister said, “This VAT has to be imposed equitably. It is not only the healthy who should be burdened by the increase in tax. Those who are ill, frail or disabled must also pay their fair share despite being unable to do so in some cases. They should also aim to get less ill in order to reduce the impact of the tax change on their incomes. For instance, if someone has a fever of 100° they should lower it to 85° and someone with a blood pressure of 150/100 should reduce it to 127.5/85 and in turn their VAT component will be less.”
“We could, of course, do more to ensure greater accountability and transparency by the medical profession, but it’s better for us to just try and tax people who don’t have loads of money and are trying literally in some cases trying to survive. As government officials we have some sort of medical scheme which sees us regularly go to Singapore whenever we want treatment so we won’t affected by the change in the tax regime,” he added.
Scientists are also working hard to find a cure for the epidemic sweeping the nation which has caused the public to be sick of all politicians.
