The Ministry of Highways said that all Mawathas will be renamed as Expressways so that the current Government can lay claim to building more Highways than the former Administration and use it as means to highlight one of the few achievements of Yahapaalanaya.
A spokesperson for the Ministry said “Members of the former Government keep bleating on about how many highways they built and it began sounding like a broken record. So having considered the options available to us, we decided that renaming all Mawathas as Expressways is the best choice. Almost overnight we will claim to have erected at least four times the number of highways as constructed under the Rajapakse regime. We will be starting with Perehera Mawatha, which will be here on in referred to as Perehera Expressway.”
“We are also considering renaming existing highways as Mawatha’s leaving the former government unable to claim that any expressways were constructed under their regime. The highways we are building will only cost the change of the name board which works out to about five rupees per kilometre,” he added.
All new Expressways will permit an increased speed limit of 100 kmph, which private busses travel at anyway so it will make no difference to them
