Just as hope was rising that 2017 was off to a good start, The Banker magazine have gone and put a spanner in the works by selecting Ravi Karunanayake as the Asia Pacific Finance Minister of the Year, probably because all the other ministers in the region mysteriously disappeared.
One of the judges said, “We were told that this year the criteria for judging should include incompetence, backtracking, dubiousness and unsuitability to do the job. After considering these it was obvious that there were only two contenders – Ravi Karunanayake and a Pyramid Scheme. However, the latter was not actually a Finance Minister so we selected Ravi. This is the first time no one turned up to give the award as they were embarrassed to be pictured handing over the trophy.”
In his acceptance speech, the Finance Minister said, “I would like to thank the press for putting a microphone in front of me so that my incoherent statements were carried worldwide and also I thank those people who loaned me money which I conveniently called a grant so that the public were fooled. I hope you enjoy my next movie – A fistful of dollars, which I have no idea what to do with’ “.
The Banker Magazine also awarded the Rupee of the Year to the Sri Lanka Rupee.
