According to sources within the Ministry of Finance, the brother in law of Sri Lanka Insurance Company’s chairman, and in a smaller capacity Minister Of Finance, Ravi Karunanayake is expected to announce that the Government will be able to bridge the budget deficit without the needing to levy major taxes by undertaking a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter.
Mr Karunanayake, who is known to favour being the banker whenever his family play Monopoly as he is favourable to handling money, said that he came up with the idea after realising that people will have no money to buy goods and services as most of them don’t have family members in high ranking positions in government companies.
A source within the Finance Ministry said that the Minister has issued a memo indicating that “There are only so many jobs out there and we have given most of them as part of the Yahapaalanaya friends and family scheme. In addition to the cushy job my brother in law got, Arjuna’s brother heads up the Ports Authority and the President’s brother is the Chairman of both Sri Lanka Telecom and now Mobitel also as of yesterday. So how can we expect qualified people to get jobs and then pay taxes? Someone get this crowdfunding campaign underway and please use a picture of me as it will elicit maximum sympathy and thereby donations.”
Mr Karunanayake is offering the person who donates the most, the chance to read out the next budget in Parliament.
