Former President Mahinda Rajapakse said that he should be thanked for the IMF’s recent report which suggested that Sri Lanka’s debt was incredibly ‘outstanding’ and not just any old manageable debt that some other countries with stable economies have.
Speaking at a press conference held in Tangalle, Mr Rajapakse said, “The term outstanding is used only in exceptional circumstances, like when mentioning me or anything that I did while in power. The highways we built, the TV stations my family started and the way I handled the dissenters were all described as outstanding. But now to have the debts that I ran up on behalf of the country to be also labelled as ‘outstanding’ is just a feather in my scarf and it goes to show what the people are really missing out on.”
“The current government are trying to get the outstanding tag removed by raising taxes, which is will not be good for our rating. What will investors think when they see that our debt is no longer outstanding? I say we should actually increase the debt load.” he added.
“What I am upset about is that they are not giving credit where credit is due.”
