Fast bowler and former captain of the national T20 side Lasith Malinga has returned to Sri Lanka with the best economy rate of the T20 World Cup currently being played in India, having conceded zero runs.
One of the selectors, who spoke to the media on Malinga’s return said, “He warned us several times that he was not fit enough to play but we were sure he would make a useful contribution to the team whatever form he was in. Our decision to select him has been vindicated by the fact that he has delivered the best economy rate of the tournament. We took a long hard look at his test statistics and realised that in the last few years he has had a phenomenal economy rate and we knew he could translate into the shorter form.”
Malinga said, “I told the selectors about my knee problem and when I heard the news that I was being selected I asked if they were smoking a joint. But having gone to India for no reason I am happy to have come away conceding zero runs. Despite the rumours, I am hoping that the selectors will continue to pick me when I am unfit so I can maintain this outstanding economy rate.”
The captain of the Afghanistan team said,”Despite our efforts we were not able to score any runs against Malinga in the first of our Super Ten games. His stare from beyond the boundary was quite intimidating that it had an impact on us and contributed to our loss.”
