Arjun Mahendran today started his new role as the former Governor of the Central Bank, and was officially disappointed by President Maithiripala Sirisena who handed over his letter of termination at a ceremony this morning.
Speaking moments after his departure Mr. Mahendran said, “I’ve been trying to leave this place for several months and it’s taken a lot of hard work and scheming to achieve this. Although the job specification was very interesting once I joined the Central Bank the role failed to live up to expectations. I didn’t like the fact that I had a significant expenses account and had to regularly travel overseas to conduct business and stay in four-star hotels.”
“When I asked to leave I was told that I could not just walk out, which is why I began getting involved in the recent bond scams. I had no choice but to dabble in some dubious activity as it was the only way I could manoeuvre an exit. It’s not like I deliberately wanted my family to benefit. Like most Sri Lankans, I actually dislike my family”, he added.
President Maithri Sirisena said of the disappointment, “It took a long time to find a suitable person to leave the Central Bank but after considering all the options we believe the Mr. Mahendran met the requirements of the role of Ex Central Bank Governor. We will be holding a leaving party this evening to mark the occasion.”
Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe said, “I’ve had to remove him from my Facebook friend’s list.”
