The Secretary to the former President has written to current President Maithripala Sirisena to complain about the inadequacy of the personal security detail provided to Mahinda Rajapakse which has resulted in him being protected by an army of just 102 people, a number so small that you could not fit them into the 15 vehicles provided for his convoy.
The letter, which required a 10 member crack team of undercover security agents to hand deliver to the Presidential Secretariat, also noted Mr. Rajapakse’s personal detail was so threadbare that in addition to the senior positions of scarf draping and protection of his personal space (currently a radius of 4 feet unless he has something to say to the media or the other person is Chinese) the only other potentially senior person was in charge of the key task of remembering his credit card PIN number.
Mr Sirisena is said to have ordered the cull of the former President’s security, saying that the country needed more military people working on the front line to protect the government from attacks against Yahapaalanaya. Speaking to the media, the President said, “The biggest threat we currently face is that we are under fire from people who say we are not doing what we promised. But this is nothing new. Politicians have been doing this for decades. Why did they believe us? We will ensure these attacks are brought under control.”
The former head of Mahinda’s ‘Telling Porkies’ Division will head up the new ‘Yahapaalanaya Is Great’ Operation set up by the new government.
