The University Of Oxford today announced that it will present Minister of Higher Education Lakshman Kiriella with an Honorary Degree In Abusing Power after receiving a letter of demand from Minister of Higher Education, Laskman Kiriella.
A spokesperson for the University said, “On hearing about the misuse of power by Sri Lanka’s Higher Education Minister, we contacted him to find out what this was about and all we could hear him say was ‘Have you read the University Act?’ a number of times, getting ever louder each time. So we read the University Act and it says ‘If the minister sends a letter just do as it says. And make sure you read the University Act.’”
“Subsequently, we received a letter demanding that he be presented with an Honorary Degree and as such we are in the process of complying with his orders. We heard he might be sending further letters of demand and keenly await them,” the spokesperson added.
The Minister is also in the process of introducing the University Act as compulsory reading for all O’Level students from next year and has sent a letter to the Head of Curriculum who is expecting an expletive-laden phone call soon if he does not comply.
