A record three time holder of the post of Prime Minister, Ranil W today declared himself as a potential liability on his own assets and liabilities sheet before handing it over to the Election Commissioner’s office last evening as per the requirement for all contestants.
“After sitting down with my wife and listing down all our assets and liabilities, I had a long hard look in the mirror and realised that I was missing one of the latter requirements when considering my perception in the party. I thought it best to list it down and be transparent before someone starts pointing fingers at me and writing me off as bad debt to society”
Other declaration sheets submitted to the Commissioner also made for some interesting reading – Sajin Vass’ assets were recorded at just 3 million short of Sri Lanka’s GDP. Wimal claimed that his friendship with Mahinda was an asset. However Mahinda claimed that his friendship of Wimal was an absolute liability.
The former President also said that he has no assets whatsoever despite what the opposition claimed and that anyway he would not declare them until the FCID found any.
Nominees also began using family members for the main reason of their existence – to transfer assets to them ahead of the 30th July deadline for declarations, so that politicians could paint the least accurate picture of themselves to the public during the campaign period.
“I want people to know the Ravi the Politician” said one nominee named Karunaratne “Not the Ravi the Businessman. That is someone else completely. We may look alike and have the same NIC number but people are voting for the latter. They are voting for the Politician. However I can’t rule out that the two people won’t have some business dealings in the future. After all they share the same body”
