Ranjan Ramanayake says he is caught up in Truman Show style real-life narrative but in his case, he can only end the nightmare of acting as himself in the farce if the director says ‘Cut’. The MP who was caught on camera hitting a camera has been playing the role of Ranjan Ramanayake since 1995 when the then director said ‘Action’ launching him into the role. However. that director then moved on to other projects without ending Ramanayake’s performance which continues to date.
Speaking at his house, which he is keen to emphasise has been rented, he said “I auditioned for the role of Ranjan Ramanayake in 1994 and managed to be shortlisted as one of the final two candidates. In the end, the casting director had a tough choice to make but I was lucky that the other guy’s name was Palitha Upawansa. The production team said that my the name fit that of the character Ranjan Ramanayake and was then cast for the performance.”
“I was expecting to deliver my parts in one shot, which I did on one feature length occasion, but have been forced to do several takes of other scenes as a result of being let down by my supporting cast. On several occasions, the journalists don’t turn up on time to my press conferences which I conduct on regular intervals to ensure I am constantly in the media. Sometimes they come too early and I haven’t finished doing press ups to ensure maximum muscle definition when I am in front of the cameras.” he added.
“I am just waiting for the director to finally say ‘Cut’ and we can end this farce once and for all. I don’t want to be typecast as playing Ranjan Ramanayake.”
