Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake today said that Sri Lanka will be debt free by the end of the year, announcing a new program to raise the country’s finances after being inspired by the on-going ransomware attack.
Speaking at a press briefing, the minister said “I thought the security provided to me by the government would have prevented my computer from being infected, but they were standing by and holding their guns while all this happened. I then was forced to pay a ransom to get rid of the virus, which I was initially reluctant to do, but then realised I can just use public money. It was then that I hit a brainwave about how to generate more money for the government.”
“I immediately summoned my IT team, who were at the time busy trying to delete my browser history after something went wrong when I searched for the term ‘money shots’. I told them that they need to look into this ransomware and come up with a way it can be adopted to benefit Sri Lanka. I have also told the Ministry of Information to issue a press release to the public asking them to refrain from updating their security software,” he added.
