The wayward driver of the bus of the SL economy, Ravi Karunanayake, whose skills are almost as bad as private bus drivers, has managed to reverse and swerve his way from a head-on collision with the latter group and avoided implementing a minimum fee on the maniacs.
Although the minimum fee was introduced during the budget reading, following a meeting between the MP and the Bus Drivers Association, the Minister seems to have backed down in the face of the threat of strike rather than show concern for the increasing number of deadly incidents on the roads involving buses.
Speaking to the media, the minister said “When I said I was going to implement a minimum fine, I didn’t mean it would be for all offences. Minor infringements such as speeding, dangerous overtaking, not stopping at a crossing and pushing people of busses will still carry a small fine of Rs 500. But serious stuff like having the radio too loud, buying toffees while at bus stops and stopping too long at halts will be fined at Rs 2,500 which is the maximum. These things can cause severe issues to the public if not dealt with.”
“What we have done is asked pedestrians to avoid using the roads where possible. With e-commerce on the rise and with increased taxes on purchases, do people need to go to shops to buy stuff? We are thinking of advising pedestrians to only use the roads in the evenings,” he added.
