A number of Colombo Hippies, who regularly congregate at Barefoot Cafe, have been accused of culturally appropriating from native Veddas after a historian recorded a number of similarities including unkempt beards and sarongs
A cultural historian said, “The Veddahs in Sri Lanka have some defining characteristics and while some people in rural Sri Lankan have taken up parts of their culture, the hipsters of Colombo have assumed it to a much greater degree. Their sarongs are more varied hues, their beards maybe a little less unruly and their red tongues are possibly a result of a glass of Merlot instead of the chewing betel, but the differences are not wide enough to suggest originality. It is clear that the Veddas should be given credit for creating the Colombo Hipster look.”
“And it’s not only the men, but the women are also wearing these sarongs. However, most of them have not adopted the beards. But they do drink the betel juice, which the call Cabaret Sauvignon by the bottle and congregate for an afternoon natter. So they too have participated in appropriation,” he added.
One Veddah, who came to Barefoot to witness the cultural appropriation of his kind said, “1000 bucks for a slice of quiche with a side of salad that wouldn’t even enough to feed a rabbit one meal? That’s daylight robbery. Bring my bow and arrow and I’ll hunt a whole quiche for you.”
