UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon who is currently on a tour of Sri Lanka said his visit was inspired by a recent article which highlighted the best countries to visit which combined a questionable human rights record with premium quality tea, published on the internet.
Speaking at his press conference on arrival, the Secretary-General said “I wanted to visit a place that combined my two passions – dealing with human rights issues and drinking tea. Despite travelling to many places over the last few years, I visited places where it was either one or the other. The tea in Africa is pretty rubbish although they have a fantastically bad human rights record. At the other end of the spectrum, Japan produces some good quality tea, but their human rights record is relatively good so not much I can contribute to improve it further.”
“However, having come across the recent article on top places to visit that combined my two interests, Sri Lankan came out on top. I can inspect the beautiful plantations in the hill country and sip on a nice cup of tea while also addressing the conditions under which some of the workers are living, which are dire,” he added.
“The country record has improved significantly over the last few months but some of the tea can still be refined further. I like my Human Rights clear and my tea milky”
