The Private Bus Drivers Association has said that the move to change the colour of pedestrian crossings from yellow to white in keeping with international standards will have no effect in them being ignored by bus drivers.
A spokesperson for the association said, “This new move by the RDA will only benefit zebras as no one will ever think that they are yellow and black striped if they see one before see an actual zebra and the paint company that gets the tender. But we as bus drivers will ignore the crossings irrespective of what colour they are painted. Sky blue, blood orange, luminous green – we are equal opportunity ignorer.”
“You could even build a wall in front of the crossing and we’ll just drive through it. The move to paint the crossings white will actually be a hazard for pedestrians because they will be drawn to cross on them. At the moment they are safer crossing on other parts of the roads,” he added.
Meanwhile, Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayke has said that the minimum fee announced in the Budget would only be applicable to serious cases like when the spare tyre is flat. Not stopping at a pedestrian crossing will only result in the lowering of the volume of the vehicle radio.
