The Foreign Ministry today responded to claims that it paid for Mahinda Rajapakse’s recent trip to Uganda saying it only agreed to pay for his outward bound ticket but sadly the former President had enough funds to purchase his own return trip.
President Rajapakse, who was in Uganda to learn how to maintain power for over 30 years, was said to have requested some financial assistance to take part in this workshop on dictatorship. A spokesman for the foreign ministry said, “Learning is a lifelong process but unfortunately, some people never learn. However we encourage their desire to gain knowledge and as such we agreed to the former President’s request to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni for a fifth term. However we were only authorised to pay for his outbound fare in the hope that he would remain there,”
“Unfortunately and maybe unsurprisingly he had access to some off- shore funds which meant he managed to pay for his return ticket. We were actually happy to fund not just his ticket but also living expenses for up to a year had he decided to stay on. Now it looks like we will have to deal with his nonsense for a while longer,” he added
Meanwhile, Mr. Rajapakse said, “I just wanted to live vicariously for a few moments, dreaming of what it would be like to have power for so long. That is why I came here. Although I have a scarf, this dude has got a cool hat which apparently you get after 15 years in power. I still believe I can reach that milestone one day. ”
