Ranil Wickremasinghe’s bid to equal the record for number of times holding the post of Prime Minister could be in doubt after reports emerged that Election Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya has received more preferential votes despite not having a party or a number at the General Election.
After overnight counting of poll cards to tally up preferential votes, officials discovered that a large number of people had scribbled the commissioner’s name at the bottom of ballot papers which they tallied up. Mr Deshpariya’s name was written over one million times topping the half a million votes received by Ranil and over four hundred thousand received by Mahinda.
The Commissioner has expressed surprise at the result saying “While I am grateful for the confidence placed in me, I am also astonished that without policies, posters and a party that I have been selected to Parliament versus those who had like the BBS. However in order to avoid working with the lunatics in there I am going to have to decline.”
Meanwhile observers from the European Union have commended the Elections as being one of the freest they have witnessed after no one was charged for entry at the polling booths
