A number of Mr Sirisena’s key advisors have expressed their concern that the President has been practising a dated and potentially sensitive salutation ahead of a proposed trip to Germany this week.
The President has been preparing for his trip by reading up on German culture and watching several movies although most of these seem to have been related to 1940’s Deutschland, focusing on the Second World War. Speaking at a briefing just before his departure the President said, “It is important that I learned how to greet my hosts and so watched a few documentaries about Germany on the History Channel. I began practicing the greeting that I kept seeing them making, where they raise their hand, at all recent local events I went to and you may have seen the pictures of this. I am struggling a bit with the straightening of the elbow though.”
“Some of them seem to click their heels together when raising their arms but that was mainly done by men wearing boots and as I will be wearing sandals I’ll skip that. And I won’t tuck in my shirt as usual. But I hope Angela Merkel shaves off her moustache by the time I get there as she doesn’t look as nice when she hasn’t shaved.” he added.
The President’s advisors have said that whatever happens he should not mention the war while Chancellor Merkel’s advisors have also suggested that she not ask her counterpart about the war either.
