The ICTA last evening announced that the UNP would be soon able to accept political donations via the popular digital payment gateway Paypal, after non-existent restrictions on campaign funding were further liberalised.
Paypal, one of the leading ways to purchase things on the internet that you don’t really need, will be introduced to Sri Lanka once the country’s financial institutions have read through the FAQ section of the service’s website.
One of the first merchants to accept payments will be the UNP who are currently selling items including a better future, less corruption than the previous lot and political favours. Their top selling item is the reciprocal back scratcher and current top salesman is Mr Karunanayake.
Going forward Paypal will also be used to make government purchases after the previous regime maxed out the country’s credit card. The last statement was so large it could not be emailed and our Bankers to the Nation – China – dispatched a shipping liner to transport the document. The UPFA previously abandoned an attempt to launch a version of Ebay that auctioned out government projects to the dodgiest bidder after the website crashed when a bid was made without a commission amount set.
Wimal Weerawansa has reacted angrily to the news saying that Paypal is another western development that is eroding local values and that he would continue to only accept gifts in kind so that no there would be no trace of any wrongdoing.
