The Media Ministry this afternoon announced that it had begun work to turn state broadcasting channel, Rupavahini, into a multi-episode series to made available on Netflix in a bid to boost its dwindling viewing figures, following the announcement that the digital video streaming site is now available in Sri Lanka.
Rupavahini, which features hit episodes of ‘The News That Ministers Want To Hear But Not Necessarily The Truth’ and ‘The National Anthem’, said that it was planning on producing even more episodes and a raft of new shows to feature on Netflix and reach people who will now be permanently staring at screens. Speaking at the media launch, the Chairman of Rupavahini said, “These are exciting times for the broadcast industry and we want to be part of it. As a state-funded entity, the digital revolution provides more opportunities for us to glorify the current government and not run a profitable operation, thus wasting tax payer’s money.”
“I have begun a programme of digitising the whole of Rupavahini and just yesterday asked the IT department to get me something called an email address. They are in the process of getting me one on Hotmail. I said they better make sure no one else knows. I have also asked our producers to start filming content on their phones, but they are still trying to figure out which end of the receiver they need to point towards the action.” he added.
Episodes of popular Netflix shows which will be adapted for airing as part of the Rupavahini series include ‘House of Card Kudu’, ‘Bracos’ and ‘Thambili Is The New Orange’.
