The recent solar eclipse witnessed by people living in the US will soon be visible to Sri Lankans as a result of the rapidly increasing number of apartments blocks rising up over Colombo and obscuring the view of the sun.
One Sri Lankan said, “I am taking pictures of birds, the sky and various celestial bodies as I won’t be able to see any of them with my naked eye by 2020. However, in place, I am looking forward to taking in the awesome sight of people’s laundry, house plants and rattan furniture on display on the balconies in these high rise developments, every time I look up. And you will also be lucky enough to see empty balconies, where some rich people have bought apartments as an investment, while many people cannot afford a basic house.”
Ravi Karunanayake said, “I don’t know what these people are talking about because when I look out from my penthouse balcony and I can see the orbiting planets very clearly, and Mars is just 200 meters away. I am lucky to have had someone pay for this place for me for six months, resulting in a rent free living and an uninterrupted view of the universe”
