The United Nations said that it would be setting up a fund to raise much needed money to help pay off Sri Lanka President Maithiripala Sirisena’s recent trip to the UN General Assembly held in New York.
The fund, which will be called UNDP (United Nations Donation to President), was to be set up with a goal of reaching Rs 90 million to settle bills relating to travel and accommodation of the Sirisenas, including his son who was there purely for reasons that that no one, including himself, quite knows.
Address the launch event of the Fund, UN General Secretary Ban Ki Moon said “This fund will help eradicate looming poverty in the Sirisena household. I hear that he has spent all his money refurbishing his new house and buying new luxury vehicles, which is are essentials for a leader of developing nation which has just instituted Good Governance. We realised the extent of the problem that Sirisena faces when we witnessed that he could not even tuck his shirt in properly. We expect him to use some of the proceeds to get a belt”
UNICEF meanwhile said it would help contribute some funding towards the cost of getting Daham Sirisena to the UN Assembly.
