Speaking at the Future Forum organised by the UN which actually happened in the past, Minister for Telecommunications Harin Fernando said that one of the key aspects of digitisation for the country is the work of politicians as the current analog models aren’t performing effectively or efficiently as voted in.
Addressing the gathering at the conference, the non-digital minister said “So far 25% of the country has been penetrated by the internet. And going by Google statistics on search terms, apparently most of them are watching some sort of penetration related videos. However, we are aiming to reduce internet penetration by 15% and have resorted to increasing taxes in order to achieve this. By reducing internet penetration, we can also reduce electricity consumption and also the number of people who are calling us out for our transgressions.”
“We are also aiming to digitise the entire government, and the first task is to introduce digital ministers. The benefit is that they don’t need duty-free car permits, are likely to have more integrity and won’t require their egos massaged through daily media exposure. Plus they follow protocol,” he added.
Meanwhile, in another session at the Forum, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe said, “We are going to make Sri Lanka an internet hub of South East Asia by installing a USB Port City.”
